Irritable Bowel and Apple Juice

If I go through even an hour without passing gas, it's highly unusual. Last week I asked what was causing my irritable bowel, greatly aggravated by apple juice, for example. I think it's sugar, but what is in the sugar? Your reply indicated that I might have intestinal dysbiosis, the wrong type of bacteria and yeast living inside my intestines, probably candida, which feed off of sugar and causes the sugar to ferment, creating gas and other symptoms. You also said I might be allergic to apple juice. How would I change the bacteria to the proper one? I am fairly certain that it is not an allergy to apple juice. Fatty foods like gravy, or often spaghetti sauce will cause great gas pain, resulting often times with severe diarrhea.

According to the 4 R protocol developed by Dr. Jeffrey Bland, the first step, after proper diagnosis, is to Remove the offending pathogen. This could mean anti fungal herbs or medication, anti-bacterial herbs, or anti parasitic herbs or medication.

The next R is the Restore the digestive function phase. Once again, proper diagnosis is necessary, then supplementation with hydrochloric acid and/or digestive enzymes could prove helpful. Using herbs that strengthen digestive function might also be indicated. Once these two stages are taken care of, then the digestive system is ready for the next stage.

Which is Restoring the healthy bacteria. This is done with supplementation of the Lactobacillus acidophalis family and others. At the same time, probiotics are given that promote the growth or the healthy bacteria.

The final stage is the Repair of the intestinal mucosa using nutritional supplementation and herbs.

This whole process is diagnosis dependent, that is, you can't really do any of the stages without proper laboratory diagnosis, like shooting in the dark. Hence it needs to be undertaken under the direction of someone very familiar with the process.

The other option you can try on yourself, is to go on a two to three week elimination diet, eating primarily brown rice, millet, and quinoa, steamed and raw fresh vegetables, fresh deep sea fish, and not much more. At the same time supplement your diet with a high quality intestinal bacteria supplement and a probiotic supplement containing Fructoogliosaccarides (FOS). After this time period, if you feel much better, try having a morning meal with a lot of a single family of food. For example, on one day have several pieces of bread, the next have a couple of glasses of milk, etc. Note which foods make you feel ill and avoid them for several months, then try again. If after several months you feel ok after eating a previously offending food, you can eat that food once or twice a week.
